3 BRYANT PARK PLAZA
Poised on the western side of New York’s Bryant Park, this through block plaza provides approximately 16,000 SF of public space between 41st and 42nd Streets. ABB collaborated with MdeAS Architects to define a place for public enjoyment and activity. Street-level forecourts, created by selectively altering on-site structures, reduce the grade differential between the upper plaza, 41st, and 42nd Streets, easing connection with the public sidewalks and inviting street activity in.
The project’s rich material palette includes large granite slab pavements and steps, stainless steel planter edging, movable furniture, and custom granite and hardwood benches. The plant palette complements the hardscape with a variety of textures, colors, and seasonal interest. A permanent public artwork created for the plaza, “The Hero,” stands tall above a tapestry-style planting design made up of 18 single-stem birch trees and understory woodland plants covering both plaza levels.
