OCTAGON SPORTS FIELD + PUBLIC RESTROOM GREEN ROOF

Location Pin

Octagon Sports Field is located at the northern end of Roosevelt Island in Manhattan. The site features a multi-use synthetic turf sports field that accommodates soccer, football lacrosse and rugby from March to mid November. The field is used by the community on a daily basis and is one of the most popular fields on Roosevelt Island.

Abel Bainnson Butz, LLP (ABB) provided landscape architectural design services for this project, which included the design of the reconstructed multi-purpose synthetic turf field, a new public restroom and concession stand covered in an extensive green roof, seating areas, reconstructed pathways, a new connection to the East River Esplanade and security lighting.

The soccer field  consists of a regulation-sized adult soccer field with 2 youth field overlays. Custom wood and concrete benches are used in place of traditional bleachers. A long, undulating colored-concrete wall winds across the site east of the sports field, providing additional seating for spectators while also creating a visually-intriguing accent piece. On the northeast side of the field, the renovated green-roof-covered public restroom/concession stand is surrounded by decorative pavers, near an additional seating area below the continuous concrete wall.

The additional amenities include picnic table areas, and an existing pergola that was repurposed and covered with vines.
