PS/IS 217M | GREEN ROOF + AMPHITHEATER

At PS/IS 217M, ABB designed a green roof that provides flexible outdoor classroom space for teaching and educational gardening, a theater area, and passive recreational space for use by all age groups across the school curriculum. Pavers delineate the performance space and general gathering area, metal planters define secondary spaces for smaller more intimate gatherings. Seasonal plantings, cared for by students, register the passage of time and change of weather over the duration of an academic year.  

The school, located on Main Street in Roosevelt Island of Manhattan, formerly had two off-site gardening programs for younger students, one at the Beacon Community Center and a second at the adjacent park.
