RED HOOK RECREATIONAL AREA (RHRA), PHASE I - IV:

RESILIENCY MEASURES, REMEDIATION, + RECONSTRUCTION

Location Pin

The $109 million, 4-phase, 30-acre reconstruction project of the Red Hook Recreational Area (RHRA) includes remediation of contaminated soil, the introduction of resiliency measures, and reconstruction of ballfields 1 through 9 and soccer fields 1 through 6 between the years of 2019 and 2023. The cleanup is a result of contaminated soil from the former Columbia Smelting and Refining Works, which manufactured metals from the 1920s to 1930s before being converted to parkland.

The 58-acre RHRA is comprised of a running track, basketball court, softball and baseball fields, handball courts, soccer fields, a playground, picnic and barbecue areas, and the multi-use Red Hook Recreation Center and swimming pool. The proposed resilient, sustainable, and low-maintenance design includes a 6-foot-wide perimeter bioswale that will provide stormwater infiltration. ABB designed this project to meet FEMA flood elevation requirements.
