SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS ROOFTOP TERRACE GARDEN
Lavender, Green Eyes Daffodils, Star Magnolias, and Daylilies intermingle among a colorful palette of green and blue hues at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) dormitory building's rooftop. The flagship residence hall for the school is located on First Avenue in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan.
ABB designed the seventh-floor exterior rooftop space, which is delineated into a series of ‘outdoor rooms’ allowing students to either socialize or study within different areas of the garden. A combination of key features defines the spaces from pavement patterns, planters, and sustainably harvested wood decking, to a variety of seating from communal tables to lounge chairs. A wooden deck helps to define the outdoor kitchen and eating area which boasts stainless steel barbecue grills and cabinetry and granite countertops. A louvered shade structure creates a playful focal point contrasting bright green and blue louvers to black, white, and grey site furniture and pavers. ABB provided complete site and landscape architectural design services, as well as construction administration services for the building’s rooftop terrace garden and the perimeter areas at the building’s entry.
“Aspiring artists come to SVA to learn from industry leaders and be part of a community,” SVA President David Rhodes said. “We owe it to them to provide accommodations to match the world-class education they receive.”
