WAKEFIELD PLAYGROUND
This project revitalizes a beloved neighborhood park in the Wakefield neighborhood of the Bronx. The renovated park includes new play equipment & swings, sports courts, an interactive spray shower, security lighting, site furnishings, and opportunities for social gathering and seating. The project, which is a jointly operated playground (JOP) with PS 16, creates a bright, vibrant, and inclusive destination for users of all ages and abilities.

The playground is composed of two levels which negotiate a dramatic grade change of approximately 12 feet between the upper and lower levels. A primary goal of the project was to create a fully accessible site which included the provisions for a new switchback ramp between upper and lower levels, detailed site grading, play equipment with ADA ramps and landings, and the introduction of new accessible park entrances.

On the upper level, new color seal coat basketball courts and a soccer field provide a large area for active recreational use. Bold geometries and color arrangements were selected to reconfigure and refresh the space. Incorporating numerous planting beds throughout the playground increased the site’s permeability and transformed what was once 100% asphaltic surfacing to a more cool and resilient environment.
